‘Fit and healthy’ man told he had ‘stomach bug’ diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer

Gary Welsh from Stowmarket, Suffolk, was 34 when he was given his diagnosis in 2021. Before receiving the life-changing news, the account manager described himself as “super fit and healthy” with a routine of going to the gym regularly, running and weight-lifting.

Stowmarket man's 'shock' at bowel cancer diagnosis

Gary Welsh, 35, from Stowmarket, had gone to hospital after feeling unwell following a COVID-19 jab in August 2021 and medics initially thought he had sepsis.

However, a scan of his abdomen revealed he had swollen lymph nodes and he was later told a 'mass' had been found in his bowel, which turned out to be cancerous.

Stowmarket resident Gary Welsh, 35, recounts ‘roller coaster’ journey of incurable bowel cancer diagnosis

A man who was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer aged 34 after going to hospital with flu-like symptoms has spoken of his ‘roller coaster of emotions’ as he raises funds for treatment. Gary Welsh, of Stowmarket, was diagnosed in late 2021 and has now launched a GoFundMe page to raise £50,000 to fund a cancer treatment drug not available on the NHS.
